After over 40 years in one facet or another of the Clinical Research industry, it was clear to Karen not everyone was really interested in always doing ‘the right thing’. There was too much focus on the dollar and answering to the shareholders, which is important, but not at the cost of a job well done. Sometimes study team members were tired and under pressure of timelines and simply decided to ‘check the box’, rather than doing the quality work required. Karen was adamant to get the data right. She knows people have given of themselves by consenting to participate in clinical research. Healthy or dying, they consented and agreed to be poked and prodded, sometimes exhaustively assessed, and often attend multiple visits at their own personal inconvenience. In this industry we are obligated to honor the participants and their willingness to contribute to the advances in medicine. Not being able to use one piece of their data, like a sample collected or an assessment performed, is a tragedy, even though the individual participant will never know.

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”
